Agenda

  • Announcements
    • Minutes from last meeting are on the forum
    • A letter to the parking office has been drafted, it will be shared with the BoD
    • We also raised $174 for Friends in Deed over the Thanksgiving dinner which has been donated
  • Visit from student Kara Whatley, University Librarian
    • She is here to try and engage with us about how to improve the library
    • She is interested in hearing how we can coordinate to make sure the library is meeting our needs
    • Also interested in making the library more like the ‘heart’ of campus
    • She is also interested in trying to expand the purview of the library by engaging student instructors etc… to help expand the scope of what the library can do (given its limited resources for instructors)
    • She is also looking to distribute a survey to the grad students about study spaces
    • Do we want to sponsor a carpentry workshop
    • Her office is on the second floor and she would love to hear any more personal feedback that anyone has, either in person or via email
    • She is also open to any questions that we may have
      • We would probably be happy to sponsor a carpentry workshop, Nicole will discuss this later
      • We would like to know how much say the library has in the software available for software
        • She would like to know if we have a list of software
        • We are particularly interested in the adobe software suite
        • Is there a budget for specific software?
          • These kind of things reside with the division
        • Also Zotero is free for Caltech students, and we would like to make sure that this gets advertised
      • What workshops could we provide that the library could not
        • The library is not totally sure what the demand is, but probably the best way to see is to start hosting them and see what the demand is like and then go from there
        • Maybe they could set up some kind of feedback or matching form to facilitate connections between students (since this may be the primary way students learn at Caltech)
      • What does the library offer in terms of data archiving
        • There are two people who deal with data management (or research data specialist)
        • We have a data repository, Caltech Data which is for data publication
          • See data.caltech.edu
  • Science for March
    • This is now called Explore Caltech
    • Will be March 14 from 10 - 3
    • They are looking for people to volunteers to give talks and booths
    • Also we need 1-2 representatives to represent the GSC on the planning committee
    • This is about an hour per week commitment until we get closer when it will be a little more
  • Committee updates
    • Science Policy
      • Well attended event with a journalist
      • Coffee hour with Caltech’s external relations officer (3 PM on 1/29 in 147 Noyes)
      • Coffee and cookies with Bill Colglazier on Feb 6
      • There are 4 grad students going to Washington DC, sponsored by Caltech (applications might still be open)
    • Diversity
      • Still working on the report that tracks admissions and enrollment of URMs
    • Social
      • Pushing forward with GUSH monthly
      • Also planning a paty in Feb
      • Working on closer collaboration with Tom Manion about the formal (would like more backing from the institute); currently working on getting a venue the date will be TBA
    • Advocacy
      • The stipend was increased to $36,500 (a $1,500 which is more than in previous years)
      • We would like to host a tax workshop, Phillip is soliciting feedback about
        • It has been helpful to many people
        • Maybe there should be some tax workshop about people who are awarded fellowships
        • The international students workshop has also been really helpful
    • Academics
      • Take a professor to lunch is still happening
      • Graduate research spotlight is still happening, there will be 6 talks
      • Also working on the student faculty colloquium
        • We decided not to have it this year in lieu of smaller division level town hall meetings
        • There is some worry that breaking it up into smaller events will discourage faculty
          • The main problem is that we don’t really have the infrastructure to plan this event (no one has stepped up to do it this year)
        • We also need someone to hopefully take over this event
    • Athletics
      • There seems to be an increase interest in sports
      • There was recently a flag football tournament with 40 people
  • We still haven’t heard about the increase in GSC dues
