2020-06-15 BoD Meeting Minutes

Agenda

  • BoD Election
  • Election of leadership positions
    • Chair
      • Ellen Yan is running for chair
      • Some questions are about how to deal with issues that the administration is not giving satisfactory responses too, how to support anti-racist activities on campus, how to maintain the relationship between the GSC and CAH
        • Two main things are to keep the pressure on the administration and spread advocacy out to the division chairs etc.
        • Things will get put to a vote regarding anti-racist initiatives
        • The relationship between the GSC and CAH should stay mostly the same as it is now; there is no reason why we cannot advocate on two fronts (one that is more antagonistic and one that is more cordial)
      • Ellen Yan has been approved as Chair
    • Vice Chair
      • Corey Husic is running for vice chair
      • Some questions are how are you going to coordinate with the vice chair, what year in graduate school, and what can be done to support black students. Would he be prepared for the responsibility?
        • Is excited to talk to Ellen and other members of the GSC, 2nd year graduate student, and wants to hear what the black community has to say and try to convey those concerns to the administration
        • Has looked through the responsibilities, and is willing to devote the time to this as his major activity outside of work (even up to 15-20 hours per week)
      • Corey Husic has been approved as Vice Chair
    • Social Chair
      • Alex Buser is running for social chair
      • Some questions are, what is an idea for social events during COVID-19, how to reach out to incoming first years and international students
        • We can do something like an outdoor ‘pub crawl’ like even so that people can spread out and keep moving but at least have some social interaction outside of zoom. Another option is Netflix watch parties or movie watch parties.
        • For incoming students hopefully very small social events and keeping a good mix of in person and virtual events
      • There are also a lot of good ideas from what Ellen solicited for virtual social events
      • Alex Buser has been approved as Social Chair
    • Treasurer
      • David Brown is running to remain as Treasurer
      • David Brown has been approved as Treasurer
    • Secretary
      • Kwan Lee is running for secretary
      • Some questions are what are you interested in seeing the GSC do and how many hours per week can you commit
        • Is very interested in mental health and is able to commit 2-5 hours per week. He is also very interested in the health committee chair
      • Makayla Betts is also running for secretary
        • What year and division and how much time are you willing to commit? What should we be focusing on to help the black lives matter movement
          • Second year in GPS, one additional thing is to also implement bias training in addition to sexual harassment training, she is also willing and able to put 2-5 hours in per week
      • Makayla Betts has been approved as Secretary
    • Strategic Communications Chair
      • Eduardo Beltrame is running to remain as Strategic Communications Chair
        • Is he changing the name? Why do you think not many people signed up to join the GSC? How to increase participation? What happened to the newsletter?
          • The Strategic Communications Chair will remain as the official name, many people do not want actually put in the time to make the changes they want to see, he implemented the GSC forum and Slack channels (also he is aiming to continue advocating for Caltech-wide Slack) and basically just getting people talking to each other is probably the biggest barrier. The newsletter has been hard to keep organized, hopefully more people will help in the future.
      • Eduardo Beltrame has not been approved as Strategic Communications Chair
      • Katherine Rinaldi is running for Strategic Communications Chair
        • Some questions are how to increase involvement, can we start an Instagram
          • She is willing to start an Instagram and also would like to work to increase participation through reaching out to many groups and getting more help with initiatives (sometimes it is just too much for one person) including through introducing co-chair and maybe vice chair positions.
      • Katherine Rinaldi has been approved as Strategic Communications Chair
    • Advocacy Chair
      • Charles Guan is running for Advocacy Chair
        • Some questions are a lot of the ideas are not new, what is going to be different this time around, what should we do if the admin does not respond, what is your position on renaming buildings, how much time do you have available
          • Leveraging the current movement and engagement with graduate students. Also making sure that we have specific demands and that students understand that they can and cannot do. One way we can escalate is going to the statewide and national letter (i.e. going public, interfacing with other groups, and/or bringing our concerns to the Caltech Board of Trustees).
          • Again, engaging the different divisions/departments is likely to be very important
          • Agrees with renaming buildings
          • Is willing to give up to 8 hours per week
      • Charles Guan has been approved as Advocacy Chair
  • The election of the non steering positions will happen at the next BoD meeting
